My Buddy Pete

Here’s a big cheer for my buddy Pete Bishop. He’s giving up soda pop for a week to see how he feels.
I talked to him on Sunday and he had been off soda for 5 days. He used to eat a meal once every day or two and sometimes would forget to eat because he [...]

Grain Mill Ordered

I have deliberated long and hard (see Grain Mill Shopping and Book Review: Flour Power) on choosing a grain mill, but I have finally ordered the KoMo Fidibus 21 from NaturalEurope.com.
My main reasons for this choice are:

I’m a traditionalist. I’m skeptical of newfangled ways of doing things. For this reason I shyed away from choosing [...]

In preparation for buying a new grain mill, I order a new book, Flour Power.
As far as I can tell, this book has no competition. There are no other books out there covering this topic. It is loaded with information about how commercial flour is milled, what get’s destroyed, etc. It also tells you about [...]

Ruined Dough

I ruined some dough the other day. I was trying an experiment with a no-knead sandwich bread and I actually ended up kneading it. I had left the dough in the refrigerator overnight and when I took it out I thought it looked like it could use some kneading. I threw it in my Bosch [...]

Sprouted Wheat

I wanted to try making some cookies. My initial thought was to start with the Nestle Tollhouse recipe and tweak it with some minor substitutions. I ended up using the recipe for carob chip cookies from Nourishing Traditions using chocolate chips instead of carob chips.
Of course this required the use of sprouted wheat flour. [...]

Beef and Barley Soup

Beef and Barley soup is a family favorite. Shari inherited this recipe from her mother. My mother-in-law couldn’t remember where she got it. I have made a few minor tweaks.

1lb beef
2T unbleached flour
4T hulled barley (not pearled)
1 quart stock (preferably beef, but I use whatever is on hand)
1 can diced tomatoes or a couple [...]

Posole

I recently bought 10lbs of posole and was looking for something cool to make with it. I’ve already made blender corn bread with red posole, but I wanted to try a more traditional dish. My first traditional dish is actually named after the main ingredient and is called posole.
I looked at a number of recipes [...]

Grain Mill Shopping

I’m shopping for a new grain mill.
I discovered that there is a widening crack in my attachment for my Bosch Universal. The ebay ad said there was a crack, but I had not been able to find it until now. Perhaps it was exacerbated when I dropped it. At any rate, my flour has become [...]

Body for Life

Well, this doesn’t have anything to do with cooking, but as part of an overall healthy lifestyle exercise is important, and thus appropriate for this blog.
I recently listened to Bill Phillips’ book Body for Life (the audio book version).
Body for Life seems to be a pretty popular book right now so I thought I would [...]

Dehydrator

I had been using a $30 el’ cheapo dehydrator for a while. The trays were all cracking and on top of that it had no temperature control so it was heating the food hotter than I wanted. I had been using it primarily for making Nourishing Traditions style crispy nuts.Enter the Nesco Gardenmaster food dehydrator [...]
